As we refocus Sheffield Business Together from the successful Levelling Up Futures in Sheffield programme we have been working on over the past sixth in partnership with the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce, Sheffield City Council and Sheffield Hallam University we would like to share with you some new opportunities we have.

Please keep an eye out for more exciting opportunities from Sheffield Business Together that focus on cross-sector sustainability in the coming months.

Businesses can help pursue the Reuseable Revolution!
Greenpeace’s Big Plastic Count revealed that the average participating household threw away 66 pieces of plastic in a week. Using those figures they estimate that the UK throws out nearly 100 billion pieces of plastic a year. It’s time for action. The newly-formed campaign group Plastic Free Sheffield Central are calling on Sheffield businesses to get behind the reusable revolution and help invest in reusable cups and containers, to be used at Sheffield’s cafes, markets and events.

AIM day Green Future 2022

As a part of its Net Zero initiative, Sheffield Hallam University is promoting its AIMday (Academic Industry Meeting day). This is a successful, proven format based on workshops where challenges submitted by participating companies and external organisations around a central theme are discussed with academics from relevant university disciplines.

To take part in AIMday, organisations must submit at least one question – that is their entrance ticket. Questions that are specific, clear, concise and that can be discussed in an open forum work best for the AIMday format. We want to ensure we have a portfolio of companies (SME, large, regional, global) participating that have a drive and ability to innovate and collaborate, looking for quality over quantity. We welcome up to three questions from each participating company or organisation.

We recommend that at least two company representatives are available to join the discussion of each of their questions. They only have to commit an hour (per question submitted) on the day but they are welcome to stay for the whole day.

Tutor for Action CollectiveThe Charity

Action Tutoring unlocks the potential of children and young people who are facing disadvantages. We’re tackling the attainment gap head-on by forging partnerships with schools nationwide. Action Tutoring are thrilled to be an official Tuition Partner of the Government’s National Tutoring Programme. Next academic year we’re aiming to support approximately 7,000 young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to catch up with missed learning, and are looking for the support of around 3,000 fantastic volunteer tutors.

The Need

Children and young people who face disadvantages are less likely to achieve in their SATs and GCSEs. We know these pupils have as much will, want and determination as their more advantaged peers but often lack the resources to help them achieve.

The Request: Volunteer tutors!

What do I need to become a volunteer tutor?
A passion for making a difference and supporting young people with their education! Volunteers are generally required to hold or be working towards a degree, or have an A or B in A-Level in their chosen subject or equivalent subject. However, we do appriectae not all volunteers will hold these qualifications.
We are looking for volunteers who can commit one hour per week across the course of a programme (10-20 weeks) and we provide all the resources and training needed to tutor, plus we will cover the cost of an Enhanced DBS check. As a volunteer, you choose the time/day that suits you best.

When can I start?
You can sign up today! Once your application is completed and approved, you will have the chance to sign up for training (a 2-hour session on Zoom) with some additional training if you wish to become an online tutor. You will then be invited to sign up for a programme (either in-school or online) which will start this autumn term.  Watch our volunteer video to learn more. If you’re interested in joining, you can sign up here.
