How Can Business Support Charities and Community Groups with the Cost-of-Living Crisis

Sheffield Business Together have been engaging with businesses to discuss the challenges facing our people, communities, and charities during the cost-of-living crisis and explore ways they can help. Whilst businesses alone can’t solve the crisis, they do appreciate that many of our charities and community groups are facing a triple hit, spiralling costs, increased demand for services and reduced donations and want to lean in to help where they can.

Below are some ways businesses have offered to help and I am writing to ask you if you have any pressing needs under those headings that we can ask businesses to support.

Businesses Offer

Below are some ways businesses have offered to support, these include, giving:

Time

Many businesses offer their employees paid volunteer days. This can be days or hours and can include supporting operational delivery, providing training, or sharing their professional expertise to support with Marketing, Bid Writing, Accountancy, Financial planning, business modelling, training etc.

Resources

Businesses are keen to support the establishment of welcoming and warm spaces and those charities providing warm meals or other food. They are also happy to co-ordinate workplace collections with their people to request donated items for your service users.

How to request support

Sheffield Business Together will consider all requests but particularly welcome requests from community and charity groups supporting our priority areas, Food Poverty, Young People, BAME communities, Homelessness and Refugees.

If requests could be submitted in the following format it would really help us to communicate requests in a clear and concise way. Completion guidance with examples are in the tables below.

Email the table to katie@sheffieldbsuinesstogether.org.uk.
Other Useful Information and Business Offers

We are working closely with Voluntary Action Sheffield and Sheffield City Council to identify key needs across the city and clarify what the ask from businesses is. We will also signpost, and share offers from businesses and other useful resources developed by this group.

Offer From Sheffield Hallam University

Sheffield Hallam University (SHU) has opened its campus to local charities and voluntary organisations to offer free space to those working to support communities across South Yorkshire.

Community organisations and charities can access space for events and workshops during weekday evenings as part of a new SHU Campus Space Offer for Voluntary and Charitable Groups. The project is being run by Sheffield Hallam in partnership with Voluntary Action Sheffield with groups able to hold one-off events or make regular bookings.

The project is only available to small local organisations. Find out more about the eligibility criteria or to book space on the University’s campus through the project.
